Round Two - Brands Hatch 14-16 June 2019

Birchall Boys and Kershaw/Clark boys riding high to Brands

We are just ten mouth-watering days away from the second round of this new-style fascinating championship over the weekend 14-16 June.

In many ways, with just the one race at the opener in Cheshire at Oulton Park, this round two on the Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch seems like the start of the season proper.

The new all-600cc formula has captured the imagination of the sidecar fraternity, and given a new lease of life to many crews. Record grids, immensely close racing, and some new names running at the front of the title chase, all these are products of the 2019 format.

Ben and Tom Birchall came away from Cheshire victorious, and since then they have had success in the Isle of Man TT. The Mitchells of Mansfield Yamaha LCR duo narrowly headed reigning champions Steve Kershaw and Stuart Clark home in Cheshire, and we expect a repeat of that battle in Kent.

One thing is for sure, the Molson Group/Express Tyres sponsored Yamaha of Kershaw/Clark will be keen to turn the tables on the current World Champions. Steve is no stranger to 600cc power, and is adapting well to the lack of horses.

Team-mates to Kershaw/Clark, running in Santander Salt colours, are 600 winners and runners- up in 2018, Todd Ellis and Chaz Richardson. They recorded a defeat of Brands specialists Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes in the final race last season on home ground for the multiple world champion. With just a seventh place to their credit from Oulton Park, Ellis and Richardson will be looking for more, much more in Kent.

Sitting third in the points are Lewis Blackstock and Paddy Rosney. Success in the world championship on the long outfit has sharpened their pencil, and they go well at Brands Hatch. Fourth and fifth coming here are the Christie Brothers, Sam and Adam, with their CES Powerbiking Yamaha, followed by Rob Biggs and Jeroen Schmitz (Taurus Tools Honda). Gary Bryan and Phil Hyde also continue where they left off with a strong sixth in the standings. All these aforementioned crews have an edge on one or two high profile names yet to get scores on the board.

Returning Superbike star Chris “The Stalker” Walker, (Santander Salt/TAG Racing Yamaha) partnered with Tom Christie came away from Cheshire empty-handed, as did former double champions Ricky Stevens and Ryan Charlwood (JG Speedfit/Quattro Plant Kawasaki). Ben Holland and Lee Watson, this year running in the same colours as Stevens/Charlwood were also victims of gremlins at Oulton, and will be desperate to register a score in Brands. John Holden and Lee Cain were running strongly on the Barnes Racing/Silicone Engineering Kawasaki, but they too were obliged to stop with problems, so there is work to do for them too. Holden is a strong force, so expect him to bounce back with a bang to make up ground.

Look out too for Andy Peach and Ken Edwards, Alan Founds/Jake Lowther, and a rejuvenated Kevin Cable. With a new passenger, Kyle Masters, Cable has taken to the L&W Contractors 600 like a duck to water, and embarked on a serious fitness regime over the closed season. He is already in the top ten, and is keen to stay there.

Another record grid line-up is entered for Brands, so the sight of this colourful and entertaining series heading into Paddock Hill Bend will be something truly to behold. With a race on Saturday, and the second in prime-time between the two Superbike races, we are set for a spectacular pair of races.

Eurosport TV are performing their usual first-class job on the entire weekend, so race two will go LIVE mid-afternoon.

This round kick-starts the new season, with the next two rounds back-to-back from Cadwell Park and Knockhill.
