Round Nine - Donington Park 4-6 October 2019

Head to head at Donington Round Nine for Kershaw/Clark and Ellis/Richardson

 

We are into the closing stages of this fascinating season,and there are only two teams who can be champions. Even with the double points on offer at the Brands Hatch finale, the gap at the top cannot be closed down to bring any other crews into contention.

At the very top however, just thirty points separate the two Santander Salt crews of Todd Ellis/Charlie Richardson, and defending champions Steve Kershaw/Stuart Clark. The Molson/Express Tyres liveried Yamaha of Kershaw undoubtedly has the speed, and the Scot's smooth style will serve him well on the flowing bends of Donington Park.

Ellis however, also has a very fast Honda CBR, and youthful determination matched with a quiet confidence, has kept him at the top of the standings. He and Richardson, along with twelfth placed Kevin Cable and Kyle Masters, have the distinction of scoring every single round. Consistency and speed get the job done, and Kershaw/Clark have missed two scores.

I can see this one going all the way to Brands Hatch, but in the mean-time, Donington is certainly a prospect to relish.

The battle for the “Bronze Medal position” could not be closer. Just thirty-six points divide six crews, all capable of taking that slot.

In the pound seats at the minute sit the Barnes/Silicone Engineering pairing of Lewis Blackstock/Paddy Rosney, six points ahead of Gary Bryan/Phil Hyde. The GBR Honda of Bryan is another fast starter, and he will be keen to retain third place.

After that, fifth place could be anyone's, with a slender eleven points splitting Rob Biggs/Jeroen Scmitz, Ricky Stevens/Ryan Charlwood, John Holden/Lee Cain and Chris Walker/Ashley Hawes.

Walker has gradually regained his confidence and race speed, with his vast Superbike experience helping him get smartly off the line.

Stevens and Charlwood have had a nightmare season with reliability, so this is damage limitation for them, with eyes already on a happier 2020. Biggs and Holden have also both been consistently fast, always there or thereabouts.

If the action at the previous round in Assen is anything to go by, there will be fireworks aplenty from this bunch at Donington.

The Leicestershire circuit has seen some epic sidecar races over the years, and we are once again blessed with a strong entry and a full grid.

But, the British Sidecar championship is at stake, and last minute nerves could easily come into play. With six races and one hundred and fifty points still up for grabs, I see Donington as pivotal, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that regard.

With one race late on Saturday afternoon, and race two bang in the middle of Eurosport's live transmission slot on Sunday, a large track-side and TV audience will get to share in what is bound to be great action.
